Authentic Chinese Cuisine

Happy Baos - A bunch of dumplings are sitting in a steamer

Located in the Mekong Supermarket, you will find Happy Baos serving up authentic, hand-made, and traditional Chinese cuisine. From fresh baos, dumplings, and noodles that are all handmade from the freshest available ingredients.

Chef Mei, who founded Happy Baos, grew up in Northern China where making hand-made dishes was just as much part of the culture as it was his family tradition. Every recipe you will find here is carefully curated and created by Chef Mei, sharing those family recipes with all of us. From every bite in every dish, you can tell how fresh and high quality the ingredients are and with every dish made-to-order, there is a lot to be enjoyed here.

For starters, you will find some great options. I had to try the Honey Sauce Ribs, which were so flavorful and tender. Since cucumbers are also a big thing right now, I had to grab their cucumber salad too. Fresh and light, cucumbers always make a great choice.

Now the rest of the menu is pretty extensive, but not overwhelming. You will find different options of baos, dumplings, noodles and more. Of course visiting a place called Happy "Baos", you have to try some of the baos. I went for the Sheng Jian Bao Combo, which is a nice presentation of a few different filled baos. It comes with 6 heavy and stuffed baos, 2 of each with either chicken, pork, or vegetables. I love how the bao itself was soft and light, but they have a nice sesame seed bottom crust and the filling was not only packed, but delicious. Xiao Long Bao, otherwise known as soup dumplings, were another great option. Light and filled with that beautiful broth. I also kept seeing a ton of people ordering the noodles, so I had to try the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. Now I will admit, my spice tolerance is not great, so this was a great excuse for me to improve on that. You could tell from the broth that a lot of time was taken to make it and while it did have some spice to it, it was not overpowering. I enjoyed every bite and the noodles were some of the best I have had in a long time.

To finish the meal, you can't forget about dessert and I was really excited to try their Dessert Bao Combo. A mix of each of their 3 different dessert baos, filled with either custard, red bean or taro. I have actually never had red bean before, as I was always a little reluctant to try it, but between the 3 of these, it was actually my favorite. The custard is definitely a great option if you like something a little more sweet.

Overall, I really enjoyed this visit. Authentic Chinese is not something I always have, but when I do, it's great to go to places that have these strong family traditions tied into the recipes. You can really tell a lot of time and thought is put into every dish and it shows throughout the entire dining experience. The staff there is also fantastic and are always more than happy to help you through the menu and make great recommendations.
