I got to stop by one of Trapper's Sushi's locations this week to try some of their Happy Hour specials! I always love a good happy hour and Trapper's Sushi's happy hour menu is a great find.
Their Happy Hour specials are from 2pm - 6pm EVERYDAY!
1/2 off Appetizers
1/2 Entire Bar Menu
3 for $33 Long Rolls (excludes Trump, Samantha, and Seasonal Rolls)
$5 off Dinner AYCE (at sushi bar only)
Let's start with the appetizers...there are a lot of options to choose from. The staff gave some great suggestions and I ended up trying their Jalapeño Poppers and the Trapper Bites. These jalapeño poppers are quite unique as they are stuffed with the usual cream cheese, but also spicy tuna. They are then fried in tempura and topped with their warrior sauce, teriyaki sauce, Japanese pepper and green onions. Talk about a loaded popper and yes they taste as great as they sound! The Trapper Bites are tempura crab bites served with their Lucy sauce. Now crab is a touchy subject for me, growing up in Maryland, my taste of crab is very different than most. For these being bites being imitation crab, they actually were not half bad. I was initially worried that these were going to be heavy and mostly batter, but surprisingly, they use a batter so light you can still see the crab showing in certain parts. This is nice because you get nice big chunks of crab, instead of eating big chunks of fried batter. I'm not exactly sure what was in their Lucy sauce, but it had a nice tang that went well with the bites. Of course the best part about these appetizers is they are all half off during happy hour, so it's a great excuse to try a few for yourself!
I was not initially planning on drinking while I was here, but since the happy hour special does offer 1/2 the entire bar menu, I figured I'd give something a try. I was recommended to try the Hornito's Berry Sunrise, which was a great choice. It has a lot of different fruits mixed into it to create something that is refreshing and perfect for a super hot summer day.
Their 3 for $33 long roll special is quite the deal! Most rolls come with a standard 6-8 pieces, however these long rolls come with 10 pieces each. Yes, 30 pieces of sushi for $33 and it's not just your standard rolls, it's almost any roll you want (minus the few exclusions listed above). I didn't count how many different rolls there are to choose from, but let's just say you don't have to worry about finding something because there are options for everyone. They even have vegetarian and vegan options too.
The 3 rolls I tried were the Vader, Magnificent and the Rock & Roll. The Vader is stuff with avocado and cream cheese, then tempura battered and fried and then topped with spicy scallops, green onion, masago, teriyaki sauce, sweet chili sauce & cilantro. There were no shortcuts to making this packed filled roll that's for sure. The Magnificent (not to be confused with the Marvelous roll) is filled with cream cheese, spicy tuna, & crystal shrimp, then topped with a fire fried jalapeño, habanero masago, warrior sauce, Sriracha & teriyaki sauce. Finally the Rock & Roll is filled with cream cheese, shrimp, snow crab rolled in tempura crumbs, covered in avocado, French fried onions, warrior sauce, teriyaki, sweet chili sauce, chili powder & green onion.
If you haven't figured out yet, these rolls are stacked to the max and all 3 for $33 during happy hour, what a great deal. Each roll was unique in their own way and had so many various flavors coming from them. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be the Rock & Roll, but honestly they were each unique and delicious.
Now, the last part of the happy hour deals is $5 off their Dinner AYCE. They do also have a lunch AYCE ($20), but for happy hour, this is just for the Dinner. Dinner AYCE is normally $30, so with the happy hour special you are looking at $25 for AYCE, which in my opinion is another great deal. To participate in the AYCE, you will need to sit up at the sushi bar only. I would recommend arriving early as the sushi bar at the location I visited in Avondale seats about 12-14. The sushi chefs are right there serving you, so you get that fresh sushi right away. The AYCE menu is different than the main one, but does still feature a lot of great options, all 3 rolls that I got are also on this menu too. You are limited to ordering 1 roll at a time and can not order more than 1 of each speciality roll, but with 11 speciality rolls on the menu, I think you will be ok!
Overall, you have to try Trapper's Sushi. The staff here is fantastic and if you need help with anything on the menu, they are always around to help you out. Customer service always plays such a huge roll in the way a meal turns out. The mentality of the service will always reflect the food, which is why it's always nice visiting a restaurant that has such a great staff.
